EU Debates Halting Trade Talks with UAE Over Sudan Arms Allegations

Information

Members of the European Parliament are debating whether to demand a halt to EU free trade negotiations with the United Arab Emirates, amid allegations that the UAE is redirecting European-made weapons to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). UN investigators and Amnesty International have traced European arms found in RSF supply convoys, and Sudanese officials say weapons seized from the battlefield can be linked to EU states. The RSF, accused of severe human rights abuses including war crimes, is locked in a devastating civil war against Sudan’s regular armed forces. The Emirati government denies violating the UN arms embargo, but EU lawmakers fear that continued arms flows are fueling atrocities and instability.

The debate divides MEPs between those who view trade as leverage to pressure the UAE and others who call for tougher measures like suspending negotiations and imposing targeted sanctions. EU leaders also worry that the conflict could drive more Sudanese refugees toward Europe, though rights advocates caution against framing the crisis around migration. A European Parliament resolution set for a vote will push for more humanitarian aid and stronger measures to prevent European weapons and conflict minerals from funding armed groups in Sudan. While not legally binding, the resolution is intended to increase pressure on EU governments to act.

So What

It is highly likely that this debate has been driven by the recent surge in public attention to the civil war in Sudan (If you want to know more, go watch my video on our YouTube channel). However, the EU may ultimately choose to pause or limit arms transfers only temporarily, allowing trade talks with the UAE to resume once the spotlight fades quietly. The key factor here is the amount of attention this conflict gets going forward. If it drops off, then the EU will likely resume talks; if attention stays high, then it is likely they’ll stay paused for a while.
