On 12 September 2025, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Alexus G. Grynkewich held a press conference addressing the recent violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones. Rutte announced the launch of “Eastern Sentry,” a new military activity designed to reinforce NATO’s posture along its eastern flank. The operation will involve a mix of Allied assets, combining traditional military capabilities with new technologies tailored to counter drone threats. Rutte commended General Grynkewich for his leadership during the 10 September incursions and the development of the initiative, as well as Admiral Pierre Vandier for promoting innovative solutions to evolving challenges.
The announcement followed a North Atlantic Council meeting requested by Poland under Article 4, after what Rutte described as the largest concentration of airspace violations to date. He stressed that Russian recklessness in the region is becoming more frequent, underscoring NATO’s responsibility to deter aggression and defend its members. Rutte highlighted the Alliance’s forward land forces deployed across eight countries, with contributions from all Allies and the capacity to scale up as needed. He also pointed to ongoing efforts to strengthen air defences and safeguard undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, emphasising NATO’s commitment to collective security.

So What
While a direct conflict between NATO and Russia is still highly unlikely, tensions are currently extremely high, and the risk of escalation is real. However, NATO presenting a strong united front is likely the best way to prevent further aggression from Russia. Though it is likely that Russia will continue its greyzone activity, it is unlikely to probe further if it fears escalation.
