Information
Turkish authorities have arrested 23-year-old youth and LGBTQ+ activist Enes Hocaogullari after he publicly criticised President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government during a speech at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Hocaogullari, who denounced police violence and democratic backsliding in Turkey, was detained at Ankara’s Esenboga Airport upon returning from France. He faces charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “inciting hatred and enmity,” as reported by Reuters. His arrest is part of a broader crackdown on Erdogan’s political opponents, with over 500 individuals detained in the past nine months.
The Council of Europe, of which Turkey is a member, has strongly condemned the arrest. Marc Cools, president of the Council’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, called for Hocaogullari’s immediate release, denouncing the arrest as an unacceptable attack on free expression. He emphasised that the Congress had already voiced concerns over Turkey’s treatment of opposition figures and the erosion of democratic norms. The incident highlights growing international alarm over the state of human rights and political freedoms under Erdogan’s administration.

So What
It is disheartening to witness this situation, as it reflects the lengths to which the current Turkish government will go to suppress dissent. Sadly, this and other recent incidents suggest that fair and free elections will not occur in Turkey anytime soon. Furthermore, it is highly unlikely that the European Union will consider Turkey’s membership until these issues are addressed, a concern that the current Turkish government does not seem particularly worried about.
