Germany and the United Kingdom signed the “Kensington Treaty” on Thursday, marking a significant step in bilateral relations 80 years after World War II. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer formalised the agreement in London, building on the groundwork laid by the previous German administration. The treaty outlines broad cooperation in defence and security, including joint export efforts for military equipment like the Eurofighter Typhoon and Boxer vehicles. It also includes provisions for mutual assistance in crises, streamlined visas for student exchanges, improved rail connectivity, and German support in tackling illegal immigration.
Leaders on both sides hailed the treaty as a turning point in German-British relations, particularly post-Brexit. Merz described the agreement as historic and long overdue, stressing the importance of close UK-EU alignment amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, particularly Russian aggression and concerns about U.S. policy shifts. Starmer called the pact a “statement of ambition” and highlighted the UK’s expanding diplomatic coordination with both Germany and France through the E3 framework. The treaty follows earlier defence agreements, including a NATO cooperation pact and a joint project for long-range precision weapons, underscoring a broader trend of strengthening trilateral ties in Europe.

Russia has effectively united Europe, haven’t they? It seems likely this is part of a broader initiative by Germany to reform its defensive posture and military. Although both countries are NATO members, agreements like this positively contribute to improving interoperability and technology sharing. Additionally, other measures such as student visas and collaborative efforts on illegal immigration are interesting developments by the UK that signal a desire to work more closely with the EU, similar to the relationship they had while still a member.
