India hails ‘positive trajectory’ in China ties

Information

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng emphasised the importance of advancing practical cooperation and respecting each other’s concerns to maintain stable relations between India and China. He shared these views during a meeting in Beijing with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who was in China to participate in a regional security meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin. During their discussion, Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties and expressed optimism that normalisation of relations could yield mutually beneficial results. He also underscored the need for an open exchange of perspectives in an increasingly complex global environment. In a social media post, Jaishankar voiced India’s support for China’s leadership role within the SCO and noted positive trends in bilateral relations.

Tensions between India and China have gradually eased after years of strained relations following the 2020 border clashes in the Himalayas, which led India to suspend flights, ban Chinese apps, and curb Chinese investments. The two sides have recently resumed direct flights and intensified diplomatic engagement. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, during an earlier visit to China, stressed India’s desire for a lasting resolution to the border dispute and called for maintaining peace along the frontier. Meanwhile, India continues balancing its SCO membership with its involvement in the Quad alliance alongside the United States, Japan, and Australia, illustrating New Delhi’s strategy of engaging multiple partners to navigate regional security and economic challenges.

So What

Although the improvement in relations between the two nations is likely to bring benefits to both, there is a chance that these relations may not endure due to ongoing border disputes, even if both parties express a desire for them to do so. Furthermore, it seems probable that Trump will view this agreement as a means to counter U.S. influence, which could lead him to take actions such as imposing tariffs.
