A widespread power outage struck large parts of the Czech Republic on Friday, leaving significant portions of the country without electricity. The grid operator CEPS confirmed the blackout, describing it as an extraordinary disruption, while Prime Minister Petr Fiala called the situation both unpleasant and serious. Train services were halted across five of the nation’s 14 districts, including Prague, where the subway system was also briefly affected, though most lines resumed service within 30 minutes. Authorities quickly ruled out a cyber or terror attack, identifying a fallen power line as the likely cause of the blackout. Neighbouring countries such as Poland reported no impact, and E.ON, the operator in southern Czechia, said its grid remained unaffected.
This incident follows several months after a larger blackout impacted Spain and Portugal, sparking fears of cyber threats in Europe’s energy infrastructure. Although the Czech outage appears unrelated to any malicious activity, it underscores how vulnerable power systems can be, particularly during extreme weather conditions. While a recent heat wave raised concerns about power demands, temperatures in Prague had already cooled from 34 degrees Celsius the day before to around 25 degrees when the blackout struck. The swift restoration of electricity to most areas limited the disruption, but the event highlights the critical importance of grid stability in modern societies.
