German politicians criticise Musk backing for far-right AfD

Information

Elon Musk’s recent social media endorsement of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party sparked controversy among German politicians and public figures. Musk, on his platform X, asserted that “only the AfD can save Germany,” drawing support from Alice Weidel, the party’s co-leader and candidate for chancellor. Weidel praised Musk’s statement and pointed him to her criticisms of past German leadership, the European Union, and the country’s economic challenges. The AfD, polling at 19% ahead of the 2024 federal election, has been officially suspected of extremism by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, and its controversial activities, such as connections to far-right figures and plans for mass deportations, have further heightened concerns.

German political leaders across the spectrum condemned Musk’s comments and Weidel’s response. Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasised the freedom of speech while pointing out that it allows for “incorrect” views. Lawmakers from other parties reaffirmed their refusal to form a coalition with the AfD, labelling it a party of fascists and extremists. Criticism also targeted Musk directly, with politicians accusing him of ignorance about German politics and interference in the democratic process. The Green Party’s Anton Hofreiter called the AfD “traitors bought by billionaires,” while CDU’s Alexander Throm dismissed the AfD’s ability to govern, given its political isolation. The backlash underscores the deep polarisation and widespread rejection of the AfD among Germany’s mainstream political establishment.

So what

It is difficult to determine whether Musk enjoys stirring up controversy or if he genuinely supports these parties. While the AfD will likely secure more votes in the next general election, a significant majority still strongly opposes the party’s views. Additionally, it is concerning to note the extent of the party’s connections to foreign states like Russia and China. Another point of interest is that Musk seems to have no issue meddling in the politics of other countries, yet he is very vocal about criticising any similar actions in the United States.
