Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar has urged NATO to develop a “coordinated” and robust response to the increasing incursions of Russian missiles and drones into the alliance’s airspace, particularly along its eastern flank. Speaking at a meeting of defence ministers from NATO’s “B9” group in Bucharest, Tilvar expressed deep concern over Russia’s repeated violations of airspace in countries like Poland, Romania, and Latvia. These incidents have heightened tensions in the Black Sea region and beyond, prompting calls for joint action to counter Russia’s aggressive activities. Tilvar emphasized the need for a collective, allied-level response to enhance NATO’s deterrence posture in the region.
Tilvar also stressed the urgency of enforcing rotational air defence and integrated anti-missile systems to better protect NATO members from such threats. His comments follow recent incidents where Russian drones crashed in Romania and Latvia after entering NATO airspace, highlighting the vulnerability of the alliance’s eastern flank. The defence ministers from the B9 states echoed these concerns, underscoring the need for a swift and united approach to counter escalating Russian provocations. By strengthening air defence capabilities, NATO aims to reassure its eastern members and prevent further incursions by Russian forces.

So what
Romania is likely not calling for a response under NATO Article 5 despite there having been talks about it in the past from countries such as Poland. However, any plan to increase air defence near the border could be seen as aggressive by Russia as NATO could use it to disrupt attacks against targets near the border in Ukraine. This would likely be seen as “NATO participation” in the conflict, though they have already claimed this several times.
